This happens when the inlet needle becomes dirty/defective or the float get damaged/out of adjustment. Those are the only ways to get gas out of the carb vent line. I recently purchased a 2009 Honda Shadow Aero 750. The specs say the fuel tank capacity is 3.7 gallons. The reserve is .87 gallons. That leaves 2.83 gallons available before you have to hit the reserve. I assume that the 3.7 gallons is when the tank is filled to the top.I would drain it and then remove the tank. This way you can control spills/drips better. Also would give you a chance to do other service like the coolant, synch the carbs, etc. if needed. But thats me. Here is a simplified picture that illustrates how the petcock and your reserve tank works. However, there isn't a "secondary" stem on your shadow spirit. Well, you still need a petcock and you already have a fuel fiilter. The strainer is there to catch any bigger debrees. As far as a fuel gauge, there is no simple way to put one on a Shadow because of the design of the fuel tank.
